Gashangi is the most frightened gorilla in the Humba family - and she was also the most frightened gorilla in the Kabirizi family from where she migrated some time between Sep 07 and Dec 08.
We can spend 3 entire days with gorillas and never catch sight of this female. We don’t think anything specific has happened to make her so scared, but that she is simply not habituated.
So she is forever hiding from us and it is incredibly difficult to take her photograph. Part of our job is to photograph gorillas and their noses for identification - and she is always a challenge. The photo here took us 3 days to get!
Gashangi was the name of a Ranger who died and it also means “clothes that are in rags”.
